The Tranz Alpine Experience
One of the world's great rail journeys, the TranzAlpine travels between Christchurch and Greymouth daily. The journey is 223.8km long, takes four and a half hours and includes 19 tunnels and four viaducts, the highest being the Staircase reaching 73m.
It's all aboard for departure from Christchurch at 8.15am and again from Greymouth at 1.45pm. The journey makes a GREAT WEEKEND GETAWAY or longer trip.
All you need to do is sit back, relax and feast your eyes on the sublime views of the Canterbury Plains, Waimakariri River's gorges and river valleys, and the Southern Alps.
If you are travelling over in the winter, be prepared for a winter wonderland - a photographers and tourists dream come true.
In summer, view the gorgeous vistas and natural wildflowers to complement the stunning mountains and rivers which only this journey has to offer.
Hire a car, which you can have waiting at the Greymouth Station for you, stay a few days at Aachen Place in total comfort and explore all the West Coast has to offer.
